The state of Alabama’s 205th Birthday was used to set up a punchline on Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update at the expense of Mississippi.

Longtime SNL Weekend Update Anchor Michael Che cracked the joke saying:

“Today marks the 205th anniversary of Alabama becoming a state. To find out what life was like in Alabama 205 years ago, go to Mississippi.”

SNL pokes fun at Alabama

Celebrating its 50th year, SNL regularly jokes about the Yellowhammer State. Back in 2016 a skit featured John Cena as an Alabama football player receiving an A+ after giving a class presentation about bananas.

In 2021, the show opened with a monologue by Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy’s with Downtown Birmingham in the Skyline.

Alabama native Charles Barkley has hosted the show 4 times and been impersonated in 14 skits, according to Cracked.com.
