Virginia Transformer to build new 600,000-square-foot plant in Muscle Shoals

Some big news came on the job front this week here in North Alabama, as manufacturer Virginia Transformer announced plans for a 600,000-square-foot power transformer plant in Muscle Shoals.
The facility is expected employ 1,100 people and will begin production in 2028.

Virginia Transformer, based in Roanoke, Virginia, is the largest power transformer manufacturer in North America. The Muscle Shoals site will be the company’s seventh—capable of producing a range of power transformers—from two Megavolt-Amperes (MVA) up to 500 MVA.
The plant will serve customers across utilities, data centers, renewable energy, industrial and other markets in the US and Canada.
Construction on the 90-acre site at the Shoals Research Airpark in Colbert County will begin immediately and initial production is expected to begin in January 2028.

The new site is in addition to the expansion work underway at the company’s Rincon, Georgia. facility near Savannah. It will increase the installed capacity there by 50 percent. The Rincon expansion will be completed in March of 2027.
