This is the week Auburn fans have been anxiously waiting for. It is likely their new athletic director John Cohen will make his most important hire — a new head football coach.

What’s the Latest?

According to CBS Sports on Sunday evening, Ole Miss Head Coach Lane Kiffin is about to parlay Auburn’s interest in him into a contract extension. He is reportedly possibly getting a salary raise upwards of $9 million annually for the next 8 years.

As a result of Kiffin staying put, Auburn has turned its attention to another former Mississippi coach: Liberty University’s Hugh Freeze.

On Saturday, ESPN’s Football Insider Pete Thamel confirmed both Kiffin’s new extension and Auburn’s interest in Freeze.

Are There Other Candidates?

Since Freeze had a troubling departure from his Mississippi head coaching position, there is additional talk about other candidates for the Auburn job. CBS Sports mentions Penn State’s James Franklin and TCU’s Sonny Dykes as possible suitors for the position.

Unfortunately, for many Auburn fans, Interim HC Carnell “Cadillac” Williams was not mentioned in the CBS Sports report.

Why the Rush?

With the transfer portal opening up on December 5th, everyone in college football is rushing to have their head coach in place.

Will Auburn make that deadline? Or does it matter?

While they continue their nationwide search, they might already have their coach on campus.
