Monroeville is known as the Literary Capital of Alabama, gaining national recognition as the hometown of authors Harper Lee and Truman Capote.

The town has odes to those authors and several other literary works and artists. The Monroe County Courthouse, which was built in 1904, now serves as a museum dedicated to Lee and Capote, featuring:

  • Original manuscripts
  • Personal artifacts
  • Interactive exhibits

WorldAtlas also highlights the town’s annual Monroeville Literary Festival which is held each March.
