This weekend will wrap up the regular season for minor league baseball teams across the country but two of Alabama’s teams will still be taking the field for at least one more home game next week.

For the first time ever, the Birmingham Barons and the Montgomery Biscuits will play in the same Southern League playoffs. Both teams will get to host at least one game in the first round and could potentially meet in the championship series.

Keep reading to find out more about the two teams + what you need to know before attending one of the playoff games.

Montgomery Biscuits vs. Biloxi Shuckers

Montgomery won the division title in both the first and second half of the Southern League season to secure a playoff spot for the ninth consecutive season. However, the Biscuits have not won a league championship during that time.

With three games remaining in the regular season, Montgomery already has 80 wins, matching their best season since 2019. One standout was Chandler Simpson, who became just the third player in the last 20 seasons to record at least 100 stolen bases in a single minor league season.

The Biscuits will take on the Biloxi Shuckers in the first round of the playoffs, traveling for the first game before returning to Riverwalk Stadium. Here’s the schedule:

  • Game 1: Biscuits at Shuckers, Tuesday, Sept. 17, 6:35PM | Tickets
  • Game 2: Shuckers at Biscuits, Thursday, Sept. 19, 6:35PM | Tickets
  • Game 3 (if necessary): Shuckers at Biscuits, Friday, Sept. 20, 6:35PM | Tickets

The winner of the best-of-3 series will represent the South Division in the championship.

Birmingham Barons vs. Tennessee Smokies

For the first time since 2013, the Birmingham Barons are back in the postseason. That was the same year the team opened Regions Field and won the Southern League championship.

Birmingham had a 41-28 record in the first half of the season to win the North title but saw a lot of its top players get called up to Charlotte and Chicago. As of Friday morning, the Barons are just 29-37 in the second half.

The Barons finish up the regular season this weekend at the Tennessee Smokies, who they play in the first round of the playoffs. Birmingham will still get homefield advantage in the deciding games of the series.

Here’s the schedule:

  • Game 1: Barons at Smokies, Tuesday, Sept. 17, 7PM | Tickets
  • Game 2: Smokies at Barons, Thursday, Sept. 19, 7PM | Tickets
  • Game 3 (if necessary): Smokies at Barons, Friday, Sept. 20 | Tickets

Southern League Championship

The winners of the two series will meet in a best-of-3 series beginning Monday, Sept. 23. The official times and locations of that series will be determined after the first round.
