Is the Katt out of the bag? Where in Alabama is the comedy superstar building his studio
Reading time: 3 minutes
Comedian Katt Williams revealed that he’s planning to build a movie studio in Alabama on the site of a former military base, though further details remain a mystery. In a recent interview with GQ, Williams said he plans to follow in the footsteps of media mogul Tyler Perry by setting up his own production facilities but without specifics, speculation has run rampant on social media as to the possible location.
We decided to put on our detective hat to figure out where Williams might be planning to setup shop and we think we may have a likely suspect: Fort McClellan in Anniston, Alabama. Below are a few reasons why we believe it’s the perfect candidate for Williams’ planned production studio.
Studio Space
Movie studios require a lot of indoor space and there are few locations in Alabama that can offer more than the decommissioned barracks at Fort McClellan. The base is comprised of 30 buildings with three million square feet of indoor space, including two large gymnasiums, spread out over 90 acres of land. That would provide plenty of ready-made indoor space as well as lots of room to build more if needed.
Access to Talent
You can’t make movies without access to experienced and talented film production professionals and Anniston is surprisingly accessible for people in that industry. Longleaf Studios in nearby Jacksonville is the home to largest green screen production studio in Alabama while Jacksonville State and the University of North Alabama both offer film production degrees.
Perhaps even more significantly, major movie studios are starting to abandon their once-thriving operations in Atlanta due to potential changes to Georgia’s film production tax credit. That means a whole lot of experienced and talented film industry professionals are looking for work with Anniston just a short drive away.
Could Alabama become the next Southern film hub?
Alabama has been the home to numerous major film projects in the past due to their friendly tax incentives and their environmental diversity. Now with Katt Williams planning to build a large-scale production facility in the state and the changes in the film production landscape in Georgia, an opportunity may be arising for Alabama to become a serious hub for movie production in the same way states like Georgia and Louisiana have been in the past.
