Local stars shine brightest during Auburn’s A-Day game
Reading time: 4 minutes
It has not been the easiest few years for Auburn football fans but 2024 seems to have the Tigers heading in the right direction again. And no, I’m not just talking about the fact that Nick Saban retired (although that doesn’t hurt).
Entering the second season of the Hugh Freeze era, there is plenty of excitement about new faces leading the way after the Tigers signed their first top-10 recruiting class in four years. And some of those new players are making an immediate impact, something that was on display in Saturday’s spring game at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Let’s take a closer look at what happened at the 2024 A-Day on The Plains and get you ready for the fall. And in case you missed it, check out our guide to spring football across the state!
Can another Cam lead the Tigers’ offense?
If you’re talking about Auburn football and you hear the name Cam, you almost certainly think of Cam Newton who led the Tigers to their last national title in 2010. But there may be another Cam joining that conversation soon.
Former Central-Phenix City High School wide receiver Cam Coleman was a 5-star recruit so he already as high expectations from the fans. And if his spring performance was any indication, he will almost certainly meet those expecations.
Coleman was named the Offensive MVP for the game. He caught four passes for 92 yards and scored the game’s lone touchdown on a pass from quarterback Payton Thorne, who seems to have a firm grasp on the starting job again. Coleman also caught a 49-yard pass from freshman quarterback Hank Brown in the opening quarter.
“An abundance of joy. It was a great feeling. They ‘re trusting me to win on the one-on-one balls and just go get it.”

Home-Towns Hero
Coleman may have scored the lone touchdown but the Tigers still scored 28 points during the scrimmage. That was mostly because of the right leg of young kicker Towns McGough.
The Auburn High School graduate was already turning heads with some of the kicks he was making at the high school level but that doesn’t always translate to success on a college football field. But McGough didn’t seem to feel any pressure during the spring game, earning the Special Teams MVP.
McGough made all seven of his field goal attempts in the game including a 58-yarder on the final play which gave the offense a 28-27 victory. The Tigers moved the ball up a few yards on McGough’s final attempt but his kick had plenty of distance and likely could have been good from 65+ yards if needed.
2024 season is right around the corner
We don’t want to take any spotlight off a busy spring sport season but we know many of you already have one eye on the Fall especially after Saturday’s excitement. The Tigers have had three consecutive losing seasons for the first time since 1950 but as previously mentioned, the expectations are certainly rising for the 2024 season.
