Marshall County Jail expansion among new building permits

This past week, 17 new building permits were issued across Alabama for construction projects exceeding $1 million. Of these, the most expensive project is a $35 million expansion of the Marshall County Jail.

Building Permits
One of the most expensive building permits issued last week was for the Marshall County Jail. (Marshall County, Alabama)

The current Marshall County jail was built to house fewer than 200 inmates, even though the facility often houses more than 300 at a time.

This new jail project will include a 250-bed expansion and a new medical unit with a classroom to help with mental health treatment among inmates. 

The $35 million project is led by Carmon Construction. The project will take between two and three years to complete.
