Now that spring and summer are heating up, literally, you may be dreaming of a mountaintop getaway. Especially if you live near the water, a beach vacation isn’t exactly going to cool you off. Well, you’re in luck because Travel + Leisure has a list of the best Southern mountain getaways and one of them is in Alabama.
Keep reading and we’ll introduce you to Mentone.
Meet Mentone, Alabama
With a population of just over 300, Mentone is known for hosting the only ski resort in the Yellowhammer State. Nestled in Lookout Mountain, just a few miles away from both the Georgia and Tennessee state lines, Mentone is a nature enthusiast’s dream. You’re just a short hike away from waterfalls, fishing holes and bike paths.
“Either way, its location atop Lookout Mountain produces an atmosphere that qualifies the destination as one of the best mountain towns in the South.”
Lydia Mandel for Travel + Leisure
De Soto State Park technically begins in Mentone, too. The tiny hamlet can claim partial ownership over that gorgeous waterfall.
What’s going on in Mentone?
Despite its small size, folks still flock to Mentone for the yearly Blueberry Festival, complete with food trucks + locally-grown produce. This year’s blueberry festival is July 13 at Blueberry Falls Farm.
