This past week, two new building permits were issued throughout Alabama for construction projects exceeding $1 million. Among these is a permit for a new fire station in suburban Birmingham.

New fire station in Mountain Brook

The $7.6 million permit for the new Fire Station No. 2 in the Birmingham suburb of Mountain Brook comes in time for the city to break ground on the project this week.

Here’s what we know about this project:

The new station is located on Overton Road, just down the road from the current station no. 2.
Construction is already underway at the new location.
The station will be finished in about 18 months.
City officials said the former station no. 2 will be torn down and used as an extension of Overton Park.

Stone Building Co. is listed as the lead contractor on this project.
