Condos at historic Huntsville school among new building permits this week in Alabama

Thirteen new building permits were issued this past week in Alabama for construction projects exceeding $1 million. Of these, six are for projects in North Alabama, while the rest are in the Birmingham metro.

One of the priciest of these permits is for a condo project at a former Huntsville school building. Here’s more:

The Annie Merts Building, which had been used by the Huntsville City Schools system for more than 100 years, will soon become luxury condos.

Here are some details on the new project:

  • The city made the decision to turn the center into condos in 2022
  • The Merts Condos will have 10 condo units
  • Three of the units have already been sold
  • Some sections of the building — like the old gym — were removed, but the exterior is being preserved
