Shelby Co. Sheriff’s Office one of 13 new high-dollar building permits in Alabama

Thirteen new building permits were issued this past week in Alabama for construction projects exceeding $1 million. Of these, five are in North Alabama, four are in the Birmingham metro, two are in Montgomery and two are in Tuscaloosa.
The priciest of these new building permits is a $25 million expansion project at the SHelby County Sheeriff’s Office.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Office expansion

The expansion of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and Jail is the largest undertaking in the facility’s history. The building permit issued this past week for the project is at $24.8 million.
The project was approved last summer, and includes a new segregation unit as well as a specialized medical health unit. Also:
- 15 new beds for the medical unit bringing the total medical capacity to 23
- The new segregation unit will have 24 beds and support space.
- The new mental health unit will have 18 beds with support space.
- A complete retooling of the entire building to bring its technology up to modern standards.
