This past week, seven new building permits were issued statewide for construction projects exceeding $1 million. Of these building permits, four are for projects in North Alabama, one is in Auburn, another in Tuscaloosa and the other is in Shelby County.

One of the North Alabama permits is for a new restaurant and a credit union branch in Albertville, being built where a former seafood restaurant stood for decades. Here’s what we know:

New credit union branch + Slim Chickens location in Albertville

An iconic restaurant in Albertville, the Catfish Cabin, closed a while ago, but the lot will not remain vacant for much longer. This will be the new site of a Slim Chickens restaurant location and a branch for the Alabama Teachers Credit Union.

Catfish Cabin, which had served the area for nearly 50 years, was demolished in July. The restaurant announced the closure in February 2021 citing the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Developer Dana Price said the restaurant (the fifth Slim Chickens location opened by Price in Alabama) should be completed by April of 2024, and the credit union branch will be completed shortly after the opening of the restaurant.

The address for the project is 8524 U.S. Highway 431 in Albertville. CN Bailey & Co. is listed as the contractor for the $1.6 million project.
