This past week saw 18 new high-dollar (exceeding $1 million) building projects approved statewide. Of those new building permits issued, half are for projects in North Alabama, while the remaining nine permits are for projects in the Birmingham area — including the $61 million addition to UAB’s School of Engineering, Frances & Miller Gorrie Hall.

Here’s what we know about these new building projects in Alabama:

Frances + Miller Gorrie Hall at UAB

After years of being housed in multiple locations, the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s School of Engineering will relocate to the new Frances and Miller Gorrie Hall, part of the Science and Engineering Complex.

This $61 million project broke ground about a month ago, but was issued its permit this past week. Brasfield & Gorrie is the lead contractor on this project.

Here are some tidbits about this project:

Gorrie Hall will be a 116,000-square-foot facility.
Construction on Gorrie Hall is expected to be complete in summer 2025.
The 2,000-square-foot materials testing lab will house the equipment needed to conduct compression, bending, tensile and impact testing on materials ranging from concrete and steel to gels and foams.
Additional features of the building will include research and teaching labs, a design and rapid prototyping lab, transportation and smart cities research suite, student study commons and outdoor patio.
