A new EV battery plant in Auburn is one of the projects receiving building permits in Alabama this past week. (City of Auburn)

This past week, nine new building permits were issued in Alabama for construction projects exceeding $1 million. Of these, three are for projects in the Tuscaloosa area, two are in North Alabama and three are in the Birmingham metro.

One notable project in the state that received a permit this past week is an $14 million facility for INICS Battery Solutions at Auburn Technology Park West.

INICS Battery Solutions (IBS) is building a $14 million plant at 2585 Innovation Dr. in Auburn Industrial Park West. The Korean manufacturing firm — which develops and sells supplying battery cell pads, fireproof bulkheads, and other products — is expected to bring 30 jobs to the area.

The company is a supplier for car manufacturers including Hyundai Mobis and Kia as well as battery suppliers like SK.

Marshall Design Build LLC out of Montgomery is the lead contractor on this project. The plant is expected to open later this year.
